About This Quote

Of course it would be hard. But I remembered what my nurseryman grandfather used to say when I didn’t want to go to school: half the work in the world was done by people who didn’t feel so good today. When I was a child, my father often told me, "If you don't want to do something, you can always say no." He would say this with a big smile on his face and the hope that I would understand what he was saying. He wanted me to understand that it is possible to say no when I didn't feel like doing something.

By doing this, he hoped that I would learn that even if I didn't want to do something, there were things that needed doing. As an adult, it's easy for me not to want to do tasks that don't interest me or that aren't important or interesting. After all, if the task is difficult or boring then I'll just tell myself "I'm not going to do this," and then I'll relax and watch television.

However, if the task is difficult but necessary, then applying my father's advice gives me a new perspective on how much work needs to be done in the world. In this way, the task becomes less overwhelming and easier to accomplish.
